Hair loss – possible reasons for the emergence of this condition

There can be a lot of reasons for hair loss and there are many possible factors which trigger this condition. Interestingly, most people automatically connect hair loss with physical problems like genetics, chemotherapy, surgeries, follicle-issues, skin inflammation, diet, lack of vitamins and variety of other minor physical factors. As a result, people tend to overlook the fact that hair loss can be triggered by one’s mental state e.g. serious emotional traumas, stress or anxiety. Therefore it’s important to take into consideration that hair loss can be easily related to psychological issues. In order to fully understand why mental issues cause hair loss, firstly it’s crucial to comprehend what hair really is and why its condition can be heavily influenced by your mental stability.

So what is hair?

Hair grows everywhere on our skin, apart from our palms and inner feet, it can be either thicker or thinner and straight or curly. However, it’s the head that draws people’s attention. The hair which grows on our heads (or its lack) differentiates people, adds them a distinctive characteristic, and makes them unique. Most people don’t really dwell on the nature of hair. Though in order to answer why hair strands are affected by our mental health, we need to ask ourselves what hair actually is. To begin with, hair is made out of keratin (a kind of protein), which is produced in the hair follicles located in the outer skin layer. Our hair strands, (also called hair shafts) are dead keratin cells that are pushed out by the follicles, as those are constantly producing new cells. Thanks to this process the hair grows. And although hair itself has no biochemical activities, it’s very sensitive. Hair follicles and the cells they produce, are the second fastest developing cells in your body. This means that they are particularly sensitive to all internal changes that occur within your body, physical as well as psychological.

Hair loss and your mental state

In a nutshell, the way you mentally feel has a huge impact on your hair. If you’re stressed out and feel under pressure, this can be directly reflected on the state of your hair. For example, it suddenly begins to look untamed, limp, fragile, dry and lifeless. Its shine tends to disappear and all your natural curls or weaves vanish. Seen as your hair is weakened, this is the crucial moment which impacts hair loss. You begin to wake up with a pillow full hair strands, you find clumps in the shower, and your hat contains more hair than usual. But that’s not all. It’s important to bear in mind that prolonged stress or anxiety can lead to much more serious hair problems. For example, alopecia areata (spot baldness) or trichotillomania (a habit of uncontrollable hair pulling) can be directly related to continuous stress. Those diseases are much more difficult to treat, and may even leave permanent consequences on your body.

Hair loss which is related to stress isn’t always easily recognised. The relation between hair loss and stress or mental trauma is actually quite complicated. Hair loss be a consequence of stress, but at the same time it is very difficult to simply get rid of stress or anxiety. This means that you should do your best to allow yourself time for activities which relax you,  and above all consult a specialist, as he/she may be able to help you create a sequence of regular lifestyle choices that will gradually eliminate your problem.
